The Supernatural Romance Genre
It's a formula, plain and simple, on par with a²+b²=c², except it doesn't help with math. What is this formula, you ask?
NG + SB = SRG
or...
Normal Girl + Supernatural Boy = Supernatural Romance Genre
You're probably familiar with the supernatural romance genre, and you'll probably think of Twilight when someone says "Supernatural Romance Genre", but the truth is, there are many other books based around a human falling in love with a supernatural creature. Now, this genre has the potential to be a good one, but the problem is an invisible rule list that all supernatural romance authors seem to follow, and that I have managed to construct.
1. Supernatural Romance Genre (SRG) stories must be from the POV (usually first person) of the girl.
2. The girl must be human, and the boy must be the supernatural one.
3. The supernatural creature must be a vampire or a werewolf.
Corollary: Either that, or one is a vampire and one is a werewolf.
Corollary 2: May also be a ghost or angel.
This genre is like an eagle, but one pinned to the ground by these three rules.
Why are they always from the girl's POV? I understand that most romance writers and readers are women, but if you made the story an SRG/Adventure, then you could attract boys and girls.
Even if it has to be from the girl's POV, why is she never the supernatural creature? Again, I see the logic behind it: normal girls want to see normal girls fall in love with supernatural creatures so they can imagine themselves in the character's shoes, but still, why do so many blindly follow the formula?
Now, I don't like any of these invisible rules on the supernatural romance genre, but numbers 1 and 2 are like coming home and finding your welcome mat missing. Rule 3 is like coming home and finding your windows smashed and your pets dead.
Please, why does the supernatural creature always have to be a vampire or a werewolf? I have yet to see any story that uses other creatures (besides ghosts or angels). Vampires and werewolves are not by any means the only viable candidates. I know that they have to look somewhat human. A human/dragon or human/peryton pairing would be very, very, very wrong, there are loads of other humanlike creatures that could be used.
- Valkyries (but they have to be female)
- Greek nymphs, like dryads, nereids, or naiads (they have to female too)
- Other werecreatures (werebears, werecats, weretigers, werechickens)
- Elves (to be fair, this has been done in other fantasy stories, like Lord of the Rings: Aragorn and Arwen)
These creatures could open up a whole new world of possibilities for stories. For example, nymphs are the source for the modern word "nymphomania", which means overactive libido. Combine that with a boy who's taken an abstinence pledge, and you might have an interesting story.
Also, the supernatural creature need not be an angsty drama queen.
It seems to me like there could be some great stories in this genre, but people are just stuck to the "Girl meets boy. Girl falls in love with boy. Girl finds out boy is a vampire/werewolf." formula, which is really holding it down.
Now, if you've written an SRG story that doesn't have a vampire, werewolf, ghost, or angel, great! If you've written a story that has a supernatural girl and normal boy, awesome! If only they could get published instead of the lame vampire ones.
